Pre-Algebra Practice

*The event has already taken place on this date: Wed, 08/30/2023
For students grades 6-7. While there are 10 meetings in the Summer schedule, the package available for purchase only includes seven (We've done this to build in flexibility, as we know summer scheduling is difficult. Students choose which seven classes they'll attend.) The skills students learn in pre-algebra will carry them through not only algebra, but also calculus in their high school years! These program provides an overview of pre-algebra foundations to set students up for success.

This course is ideal for students entering 6th and 7th grade, as we'll be covering the fundamental principles that support pre-algebra studies. Topics of discussion include number theory; the commutive, associative, and distributive properties; prime factorization and lowest common multiples/greatest common factors; fractions, decimals, and percentages; multiplication and division strategies, including standard algorithms; order of operations; variables and expressions; ratios; exponents; and inequalities vs. equations.

Our instructor for this course will be Jess. Her appreciation for math deepened when she joined the Math Team as a middle school student herself. Jess went on to be one of only thirteen young women invited to join the Illinois’ Allstate Academic Team, preemptively completed college course work through a scholarship at University of Cambridge (UK), and received membership invitations to a multitude of honors societies. She was offered four full-ride scholarships to top ranked universities for academic merits, and ultimately completed undergraduate studies at Emory University. Her academic aptitude accelerated in college, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude among numerous other academic accomplishments. She has been a STEM instructor for years, working privately with homeschooling families across the country at the middle and high school level. Jess has experience with a variety of math curriculums, and will be covering the most critical pre-algebraic concepts in this course.

There will be ten meetings in the Summer schedule, but the current package available for purchase only includes in seven (we do this so families aren't paying for missed sessions during vacations or summer camps). Of course, each family chooses which meetings they'll be attending and has the option to add dates later on. Each meeting is $25. To preserve opportunities for individualized attention, the average class size is capped at six students per meeting.
