Ocean Explorers After School Program

Ocean Explorers is an online after school program designed for children 8-12. This program is hosted by enthusiastic and engaging instructors who lead your children through live chats, videos, presentations, interactive activities and/or crafts. No parent assistance is needed as this program comes with a kit that includes supplies needed for the program.

Ocean Explorers is an online after school program designed for children 8-12.  Over the course of this program, children learn about a diversity of marine mammals, their adaptations, and what they do to make a living under the sea.  This program is hosted by enthusiastic and engaging instructors who lead your children through live chats, videos, presentations, interactive activities and/or crafts. No parent assistance is needed as this program comes with a kit that includes supplies needed for the program.

Ocean Explorers is a science and conservation-based program designed to build awareness and interest in the marine environment, creatures that call it home and science careers. This program supports a variety of Next Generation Science Standards.  Ocean Explorers explores two separate themes: Mystery Mammals and Ocean Oddities.

Number of online sessions per program: 4

Session lengths: 1.5 hours

Time: Session I (1 PM PST) or Session II (4PM PST)

Dates: Every Wednesday in the month of October- October 5th, 12th, 19th & 26th

Ages: 8 to 12

Class size: limited to 20 participants per session

Cost per participant: $130.00; Full payment at registration is required to hold a spot for your child.

What supplies will I need?  PMMC will mail a fun kit to you ahead of time that will contain most of the materials your child will need. Other things to have on hand during the program, which are not included in the kit: Scissors, glue, scotch tape, pencils, markers, or crayons.

Refunds: Are only provided for medical emergencies verified by a doctor. Reimbursement is not given for any missed days or cancellations. All proceeds from Ocean Explorers go to the medical care and treatment of our seal and sea lion patients.


FALL PROGRAM

Mystery Mammals

Did you know that our oceans are the last unexplored frontier on planet earth?  Oceans cover 70% of the earth’s surface, but only 20% of our oceans have been explored! Discover aquatic ecosystems and mystery creatures that live under the sea! Explorers will investigate dolphin habitats, uncover the diets of crab eater seals, and engage in a vessel-boat strike STEAM challenge!

Session I: Tucuxi- Discover amazing facts about the enchanting Tucuxi, their fresh water habitat and the threats they face in the wild.  In this session, explorers will become ecosystem experts investigating biomes all over the world as well as gaining knowledge about the Amazon River Basin. Explorers will be put to the test in a game of ‘balancing the biome’ within the Amazon River Basin. Can you help us save the Tucuxi and their habitat?

 

Session II: Minke Whales – Minke Whales are members of the baleen or ‘great’ whale family and are the most abundant of all the baleen whales! Since they can be found in oceans all over the world, Minke Whales face numerous threats such as vessel strikes due to heavy ship traffic.  In this session, explorers will investigate the rise of shipping traffic along Minke whale migration routes and then work together to complete a vessel strike STEAM challenge!

Session III: Crab Eater Seal- Crab eater seals must eat crab, right? Think again! Explorers will uncover the crab eater seal’s diet, work together to understand the Antarctic ice biome and play a bio magnification food web game!  

Session IV: Right Whale Dolphin- What do Right Whale Dolphins and penguins have in common?  Counter shading! Explorers will discover the unique adaptation of counter shading and get crafty understanding color value in the ocean. Learn how these social animals blend in use countershading to disguise themselves from predators in the depths!
