Exploring the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum in Springfield, Massachusetts

By Meg Brunson

From the books to the movies, our family loves all things Dr. Seuss and we could not wait to see what wacky fun awaitted for us at the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum!

The kids loved seeing life-size representations of some of their favorite stories like Oh, the Places You Will Go, Horton Hears a Who, The Lorax, and (of course) The Cat in the Hat!  Books were readily available so the kids could read through their favorites, and attempt to find books they were not yet familiar with, and they had interactive exhibits (like a recycling game with the Lorax, and the Seuss Bakery) and computerized games that the kids loved as well. There are photo opps GALORE throughout the museum!

The Cat's Corner (downstairs) offeres a craft of the day - and on the day of our visit we made bow ties just like the one worn by The Cat in the Hat himself!

And upstairs we enjoyed learning about how they made the sculpture garden. We were reminded that Dr. Seuss was a pen name of a man actually named Theodor (Ted) Geisel) and we got to see many of the furniture, possessions, and art materials that were actually used by Ted Geisel in his California studio and sitting room. This exhibit space also features never before publicly displayed art and personal, quirky notes he used to share with his stepdaughter. We also really loved the Ted2Ted exhibit, where they had many notes, illustrations, and keepsakes from Geisel that were sent to his grand-nephew, also named Ted. Browsing the second floor, we felt like we really got to know the man Geisel was behind the scenes - and seeing how similar he reall was to "Dr. Seuss!"

Tips for a Great Trip

  • Plan a full day - When you purchase a ticket to Springfield Museums, you gain same-day access to ALL their museums (conveniently located on the same block, known as the Quadrangle). Arrive early and spend the whole day enjoying the museum(s) of your choice!
  • Timed Tickets - Since the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum is very popular, they use timed tickets to stagger admissions and help control crowds. Grab your timed ticket first - then plan visits to the other museums around that!
  • Lunch - The Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden is located in the Quadrangle, along with lots of grassy patches and park benches. This is where we enjoyed our picnic lunch between checking out museums! If you prefer to buy lunch, you can visit the Cafe on site!
  • Illustrators Trail - Purchase a combo ticket if you're up for a bit of travel to visit The Carle PLUS 2 additional iconic illustrators: Norman Rockwell, and Dr. Seuss at nearby museums!  Learn more HERE.

I love attractions like this that truly appeal to everyone. Young children will love seeing life size Dr. Seuss characters and playing in the many interactive exhibits, and grown-ups will enjoy the the nostalgia and historical information.
